Haunted castle 146
You're a camper seeking shelter from very bad weather there. It's a thunderstorm and a windstorm together. Your tent wouldn't protect you from a forest fire caused by lightning, a thunderbolt hitting a nearby tree, a heavy branch breaking down from the gale and hitting the tent and so on.
Rain won't prevent that, it's too dry yet, it'll fall later. It might be too late by then, especially if the wood's ignited already. It's also rather chilly, you fear a cold or worse pneumonia, because you only wear summer clothes.
Luckily the building isn't structural unstable. It's dilapidated and deserted and the furniture got nearly all stolen though. Well, you've got canned food and drink for several days with you, a lilo and a sleeping bag and a place by a window with intact glass is acceptably comfortable if combined with both. There is also a stove and enough paper, dry twigs and logs to get warm with.
Nobody bothered with them, for the thieves must have all central heating, as you guess. Soon there are roaring flames in it, for you've brought a nearly full box of matches. 24 hours later it'll be safe to leave too, for the tempest should've abated by then.
Standing in the hall you listen and think it must be haunted. The ghosts didn't cross over, for not even hell would have them. They won't harm you physically, for they need to materialize to do so and if they don't, you can't fight back.
That's why one ghostbuster wears ecto goggles at the hotel during their first assignment, I think. They could eliminate those creatures completely, if fully equipped though. Pity they're just made up here. Even if you wanted to, you'd only have a common knife to attack with and it wouldn't do you any good.
They don't know that though. They keep therefore cowardly out of sight, but one feels their presence like a cold draft and their sounds can even drive the toughest minds insane if heard for too long, but that would be for at least several and ceaseless weeks ...
