Stagnant Black Forest
Fear is what drove you to seek refuge in the old growth forest against your better sense. You feel that you have escaped that which pursued you, but you wonder if you've made the right choice.
Here, no sunlight filters through the canopy, just an eerie faint twilight glow. No songbirds lend their voices to the heavy atmosphere, just the creaking, squeaking of hidden branched and the occasional throaty, foreboding call of crows. In fact, every sound seems muffled, as if layers of gauze are wrapped about your ears. Your breath feels close, the scent of rotting wood and mold suffocating, and the dark shapes of fat, twisted trunks seem to crowd far too close around you until you have to climb over the gnarled roots that choke the forest floor, and edge around jagged, low-hanging branched that seek to snag your skin. Somehow, the trees themselves feel threatening, predatory.
You don't know where you are anymore, every direction looks the same; impenetrable hazy darkness, with shadows moving in the corners of your eyes, only to vanish when you look at them directly. You are sure something is following you still. Or perhaps it is the woods themselves that thirst for death, now.
