    The Ruins of Lordaeron

Most people hated Battle for Azeroth - me included, regarding mechanics and the majority of the lore. That being said, hear me out.

I can't explain why I keep getting inspired by the Fourth War because it was such a disaster in and out of the game, but as a roleplayer, I think about it a lot. Specifically, I think about the fact that everyone who died in Lordaeron, irregardless of the faction, and everyone who couldn't outrun the blight are all still out there. They're wandering around, likely to never be collected. In fact, the day after the pre-expansion event occurred, I flew to the outskirts of Brill just to see if anyone else was lingering around. I saw a small crowd gathered right at the edge of the blight cloud, Alliance and Horde alike, just...watching. I got brave and approached them, and so there we all stood, talking and listening and mourning. Somebody mentioned that earlier, a warrior had returned to the site of the battle in a desperate attempt to retrieve the wandering corpse of his brother who had fell defending the Undercity. It took more than one person to hold him back.

I tried to convey the eerie, somber aftermath of walking through Brill and hovering just on the outskirts of the poison. Fires continue to rage in the ravaged path of war and a stiff autumn wind fans the flames further. Skeletons once belonging to orcs and tauren roar and groan. The more humanoid races of the Alliance sob and choke, replaying the agony of their final moments. The rattle of rusty armor and battered shields frightens away the crows searching in vain for carrion.

Roleplaying may not be very important in the grand scheme of things, but even fantastical fiction can evoke very powerful images if you've got the brainspace for it.
